New ACOG Guidelines
The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
recently updated its practice guidelines on the role of the
obstetrician/gynecologists in diagnosing ovarian cancer. The
OCAO in conjunction with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA),
applauds the new guidelines which reflect the latest scientific evidence
on screening, symptoms and surgical staging. The ACOG guidelines
state that ovarian cancer DOES have symptoms, and recommends
that initial surgery be performed by a gynecological oncologist.
Obstetrician/gynecologists are front line doctors, may with ovarian
cancer see a gynecologists before being referred to a gynecologic oncologist
for surgery and treatment. Given that ACOG represents 52,000
obstetrician/gynecologists across the United States, we are pleased to
see this updated committee opinion on ovarian cancer. The OCAO and
the OCNA hope that women's heath care providers will recognize the
signs, symptoms and risks of ovarian cancer and appropriately refer
patients to see specialists
