FY13 Ovarian Cancer Research Fund 2013

The OCAO along with our affiliates including the Ovarian cancer
National Alliance are pushing for greater ovarian cancer research
funding from Washington.

On March 20, the FY13 appropriations request went through the House
of Representatives and has closed. There were 64 House representatives
that signed the FY13. Ohio's Dennis J. Kucinich and Tim Ryan were among
the 64 who signed. Stay tuned for additional information and that you for
your support.

New ACOG Guidelines

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
recently updated its practice guidelines on the role of the
obstetrician/gynecologists in diagnosing ovarian cancer. The
OCAO in conjunction with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA),
applauds the new guidelines which reflect the latest scientific evidence
on screening, symptoms and surgical staging. The ACOG guidelines
state that ovarian cancer DOES have symptoms, and recommends
that initial surgery be performed by a gynecological oncologist.

Obstetrician/gynecologists are front line doctors, may with ovarian
cancer see a gynecologists before being referred to a gynecologic oncologist
for surgery and treatment. Given that ACOG represents 52,000
obstetrician/gynecologists across the United States, we are pleased to
see this updated committee opinion on ovarian cancer. The OCAO and
the OCNA hope that women's heath care providers will recognize the
signs, symptoms and risks of ovarian cancer and appropriately refer
patients to see specialists
