Get Involved

The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio (OCAO) is an advocate for those affected by ovarian cancer. A non-profit organization committed to raising awareness among women, healthcare providers and the greater community regarding the early warning signs of ovarian cancer, we raise funds locally to further our mission to promote early detection to improve outcomes and help save lives.

If you would like to join us in the battle against ovarian cancer, there are a number of ways you can help. Please look at different committees to see what would fit your interest in join us in the fight.

Outreach & Awareness Committee

The Outreach & Awareness Committee works to raise ovarian cancer awareness within the community. They also reach out to patients touched by this disease and provide education, supportive and collaborative opportunities. They work to plan events such as Turn Huntington Park Teal that allow survivors, caregivers, friends and families to network and meet one another, to share their stories with the public as well as each other. This networking also engenders volunteers for other awareness activities and engaging support (S.O.S.) for newly diagnosed women. If you would like more information or would like to join this committee, please contact outreach@ocao.org.

Education Committee

The Education Committee works to raise awareness and to foster knowledge of ovarian cancer symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and support as well as dealing with recurrent disease. We do this by attending health fairs and educational programs, engaging in public speaking as well as working with treatments centers and physicians and survivors networking with others. We partner with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance and the Foundation for Women’s Cancer. If you would like more information or would like to join this committee, please contact education@ocao.org.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee is charged with the safekeeping of OCAO funds and all record keeping in compliance with all nonprofit accounting laws and regulations. They work with the Treasurer and President to maintain QuickBooks, event reconciliations, donation tracking and financial reporting. Accuracy of our books and keeping the OCAO viable is a key responsibility to the Board by this committee. If you would like more information or would like to join this committee, please contact treasurer@ocao.org.

Strides for Hope 5K Walk/Run Committee

The Strides for Hope Committee plans the annual Strides for Hope 5K walk/run. This event raises awareness and is the major fundraising activity for the OCAO. All funds raised go directly back to the OCAO to support its Mission. If you would like more information or would like to join this committee, please contact walk@ocao.org.

Marketing Committee

The Marketing Committee is responsible for production and oversight of the OCAO’s promotional materials and creation of public relations and media related public service announcements and activities with the sources contracted by the Board of Directors. If you would like more information or would like to join this committee, please contact marketing@ocao.org.

Our mission at the OCAO is to promote awareness and to educate folks about Ovarian Cancer. We participate in and/or host several awareness events throughout the year, so there are many ways you can help us in raising awareness and in educating women in our the battle against Ovarian Cancer. Please look at following committees to see what area and role best fit your preferences.

Outreach & Awareness Committee

The Outreach & Awareness Committee works to raise ovarian cancer awareness within the community. They also work to plan events to allow survivors and families to network and meet one another and to receive new and vital information about ovarian cancer research.

Education Committee

The Education Committee works to provide the public with information on ovarian cancer’s symptoms as well as what increases a woman’s risk of developing the disease. We attend Health Fairs, Sunny 95 Girls’ Nights Out and many other venues to meet and speak with women and their spouses/partners, families.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee is charged with the ongoing accounting and record keeping of the OCAO’s funds. They work to ensure that money is utilized properly and meets both the IRS and 501(c)3 standards under which the OCAO was incorporated. They are the financial accountability and IRS contact for the OCAO.

5K Walk – Run Committee

The 5K Walk / Run Committee works to plan and conduct the annual Strides for Hope 5K walk / run. The 5K is not only an awareness event, but it is one of two major fundraising activities for the OCAO. Funds raised go directly back to support and implement the OCAO’s mission of promoting awareness and educating about Ovarian Cancer.

Marketing Committee

The Marketing Committee is responsible for all of the OCAO’s promotional, media and public relations related activities. They work to procure brand uniformity in all of our materials and brochures as well as to help implement the OCAO’s mission within the Community. We author a Teal Newsletter as well.

The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio offers internships in the following areas:

  • Marketing/Public Relations
  • Public Policy/Advocacy
  • 5K Walk Planning
  • Fundraising
  • Nonprofit administration
  • Education/Awareness/Survivor Outreach
  • Finance

Interns gain exposure to the issues faced by a nonprofit advocacy group and learn about our growing organization from the inside out. An intern’s responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in outreach and publicity
  • Assisting staff with special projects
  • Attending planning meetings
  • Drafting letters and press releases
  • Corresponding with Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio Partners
  • Maintaining databases
  • Assisting with newsletters, web content, and advocacy
  • Interns also help answer phones, handle mail, and perform other general office tasks as required

Qualifications:

  • Interest in communications, health advocacy work and women’s health issues
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • High level of computer proficiency, some experience using database programs and/or HTML skills a plus
  • Ability to work independently
